WHY IT PAYS TO TAKE ON THE JOAO SHOW AT HAPPY VALLEY

He’s nicknamed The Magic Man for a reason: champion Brazilian jockey Joao Moreira just keeps breaking new records and creating new ones!

A few weeks ago, he rode an extraordinary eight winners at one race meeting! The Jockey Challenge belongs almost exclusively to him. At least it does in Shatin, where he rides for the powerful stables of trainers John Moore and John Size.

When riding in Happy Valley, he is almost always favourite to win The Jockey Challenge, BUT it’s not always a one man show. It’s more of a level playing field than when racing in Shatin and where The Magic Man keeps pulling rabbit after rabbit out of his hat.

In recent weeks at Happy Valley, he has lost The Jockey Challenge to Irishman Neil Callan, Australian Zac Purton and Mauritian Karis Teetan. One major reason could be that trainers Size and Moore don’t have the same horsepower that they do in Shatin. The leading Happy Valley trainers are Caspar Fownes, Me Tsui, Danny Shum, and other trainers who don’t always turn to the Joao Show. They stay loyal to their favourite jockeys.

The Jockey Challenge is a fun game to play amongst friends. Pick a jockey to support and follow each of their rides and see how many points they accumulate during the course of the night- 12 points for coming first, 6 for second and 4 for third.
