THE WEATHERING: CAN THEY AVOID THE STORM CLOUDS?

Let’s get a few things straight: As Hong Kong music fans and longtime supporters’ of an industry gone awry, we have always seen and heard Jeff Caylor as a multi-media artist.

This song of his- and the video he created- should have been a MASSIVE hit. Come on Channel [V] and MTV Asia, how could you knobs have over-looked this track and the making of the accompanying video?  But fuck’ em and the local offices of the so-called International recording companies. They’re run by gophers and gremlins and overseen by the cast of Lost.  At 40 now, Jeff Caylor should be a star.

In this day and age, one has to push that creative envelope. If not.our locally created music will continue to be enveloped in mediocrity and, sad to say, there is a lotta mediocrity around.

Sorry, but being “Indie” gives no one a pass to get up onstage and play shitty music for a few hundred people. It’s fucking embarrassing.

So, we were happy to get this first official music video from The Weathering, the first release from Jeff Caylor and his kinda new wife, Leora Gardner Caylor.

This is no John and Yoko. Just as Jeff is a very good multi-media artist, Leora is no slouch and didn’t break up the Beatles. And so, we listened to this track over and over again and loved the whole “sonic boom” of the recording and the accompanying video.

As good mates of the couple, could the track have been mixed better? Perhaps. Both are wordsmiths and some of the words get lost in translation which makes the video a little too esoteric to understand. Maybe we are gormless simpletons.

Having said this, it’s  just us nit-picking and, like Jude. trying to make a good song better. But that’s just us. The key thing is that Hong Kong finally has a truly quality International product on its hands. Speaking of which, we watched Coco Lee name-drop on Bloomberg a few days ago about being Asia’s token Superstar and fell asleep. Seldom have we heard such crap from an artist who is over-the-hill but married to one of the richest guys in Hong Kong- and which doesn’t make anything more than an opportunist stab at music. And, Bloomberg, that was a sycophantic interview. Oh, puleese, try and watch this video and pick the holes in her stories.

Hong Kong needs artists with great integrity and not part of the Copycat Patrol. We have heard enough of angst and whiny Emo bands with lead singers who cannot sing. It’s not taking Hong Kong music far and neither are small-time sessions in clubs no one visits. It’s fun- and so?  

Meanwhile. we know where Coco Lee is heading and which is to wherever she wishes to go- and at her age and against the young Rihannas and Nickie Minjaj’s of this world, it will be touring China and Taiwan.  

She’s married rich and is signed to one of Richard Lee’s unknown labels which, hopefully, is better than his PCCW albatross.

We guess, our question is this: And now what for The Weathering? Coco will be fine.     Yes, there’s an album release show set for February 1, 2013 to be held on the 2/F at 633 Kings Road where there’ll be a full band.

They are also updating their website with all the details, but for now www.facebook.com/theweathering has the most current information.   And then “What Next?” is the question.   We’re sure they have the answers as they are a very smart couple who we love dearly- and are just looking out for them and offering some tough love.
