For me, the highlight of tonight’s races will be Race 8 and seeing how King Mossman performs over the 1000 metre trip at Happy Valley.
As some of you might remember, the last time King Mossman ran, it was over 1200 metres at Shatin and where a superb tactical ride by regular rider Douglas Whyte saw it down the favourite, Bear Hero, ridden by Alvin K C Ng.
Right now, Bear Hero is in Melbourne and preparing to take on the likes of some of Australia’s top sprinters like Sepoy.
All going according to script, King Mossman should win – easily – the operative word being should.
Tonight sees the return of Champion jockey Douglas Whyte after a two day suspension for careless riding.
How are his other mounts tonight?
On paper, they look to be pretty outstanding with his best being in Races 1, 2 and 7.
One which we will keep safe is the newcomer Whyte rides for Dennis C H Yip in Dream Builder and for which the jockey has been putting in a great deal of work.
However, I prefer the Tony Cruz-newcomer Danewin
What about the King Of The Valley – Caspar Fownes?
After that heart-breaking loss on Sunday with Best City, Fownes would surely be looking for some “compensation.”
He has a good chance to make up for that Sunday loss with Ride On The Fire – something you would not wish to try if you wish to have your ass in one piece – Race 3.
However, I like the two horses who dead-heated for second the last time they met – Prosperous and China Good.
Fownes’ My Way (Race 4) has a winning chance but this is a trappy race as does his one in race five- Lucky Together- and I would be just watching both races and having a small bet on the Triple Trio.
Caga Spirit with ten-pound claimer Alvin K C Ng replacing Howard Y T Cheng, I like.
In fact, I liked it last time when the “showbiz” boys who own all these Caga-named horses backed it, but it pulled and reefed and ended up fourth.
With Ng claiming the ten-pound allowance it should make amends though, especially after seeing all his hot pots bite the dust last Wednesday, I remain unsure about Ng’s ability to effectively ride the tricky Happy Valley track for the time being.
All in all, a night which could see most of the favourites in the money though Races 4 and 5 might require only a small flutter while you join me in taking in all the fun of Happy Wednesday’s Oktoberfest.
