Anytime there are all-weather races, The Guru’s heart sinks; they always end up kicking sand all over your face and bets.
They are just unpredictable even when following horses with “dirt form.”
One minute, they take to it like a duck to water, the next moment they get bogged in quicks and and plod home.
Looking at the card, we wonder if Douglas Whyte will bow out before starting another two-day suspension for careless riding.
What’s with the Durban Demon this season and these suspensions?
Then again, look how many jockeys are sidelined for the same offence.
I very much doubt Douglas Whyte loses much sleep over these suspensions.
Of his rides today, I like Delish in the last race.
When he goes through all the hard work of wasting to ride a horse at 114/116 pounds, one MUST follow it.
He doesn’t have to bother to get down to this weight and trainer John Size could have put up a naturally lightweight jockey like Mark Du Plessis on it or Tim Clark or even used a claimer.
But, it looks like Whyte Lighting is about to strike here as he has really gone after the ride.
He also has a very good chance with Elusive Prince in Race 6 and some chances in the all-weather races but which I’ll pass on.
Brett Prebble has a good looking book of rides – on paper – but looked what happened to many of his good chances on Thursday?
They flipped and flopped and with the Red Seas parting for Terry C W Wong on the David Hall-trained Jun Hua while Prebble, who does much of the riding for his old mate “Hally” seemed to struggle on the hot pot Peppermint.
That’s racing for you.
So today, The Guru will be treading gently.
The season is still new and I’ll just follow Whyte on, especially, Flying Unicorn (Race 1), the newcomer Celestialblessings which just might need this run (Race 4) , Elusive Prince (Race 6), perhaps The Wand (Race 7) though Sky Mascot and Darpana will be hard to beat, King Mossman to place (Race 10) and Delish in (Race 11) as a quinella with Scarlett Camellia.
