We’ve never been fans of the trots.
Same goes for greyhound racing.
We were once told by one head of a greyhound club how some handlers were paid to squeeze the balls of dogs, so they would stagger out of their boxes.
One bookie actually warned us NOT to bet on the dogs.
Do that and we’d go to the dogs, he said.
His other advice was to just back the dogs as quinellas by combining those from box1 and the two outside boxes on all races and how we’d be in front at the end of the day.
We never tried this.
Crippling greyhounds put us off the so-called sport.
Same with the trots or harness racing.
Apart from any elaborate trickery or rorts, it is a sport that can be so easily rigged.
Now in NSW and where horse racing is also taking a pounding as attendances drop along with the lack of horses being entered, Harness Racing NSW has its hands full with some strange goings on – especially a race held in Bankstown involving the trotter Stand Your Ground winning from Tessace (blue blanket) and Smokin Luke on July 30 this year.
Stand Your Ground was heavily backed in to $2.80 favourite and led throughout to win, beating Tessace and Smokin Luke and with turnover on the race very strong given its position on the Saturday twilight timeslot with $56,754.50 in the NSW TAB win pool. The following event, run 20 minutes later, had only $32,061.50 in the same pool. Hmmmm.
