Longwah Supreme
Taking advantage of a track bias which saw horses storming down the centre of the track, the Michael C W Chang-trained Longwah Supreme took out the highlight race of today’s Shatin meeting – The Chinese Recreation Club Challenge Cup.
Yet, bias or no bias, this is one very good horse and the look on Olivier Delouze’s face when the horse swept down the outside and win almost on double wraps, said it all: “Mes amis, zis eez a tres magnifique horse!”
Though starting as favourite, there was plenty of money for the top weight – Eagle Regiment which was not only humping all that weight, but also attempting 1200 metres for the first.
Still despite the backing, the horse was never in the race and with jockey Brett Prebble looking down to see what was wrong with it, we’d like to see what the vets report might say.
As we tipped it would, there was a huge run by the John Size-trained King Mossman which tried to lead all the way under Douglas Whyte and came a very game second.
The other big run was by Captain Sweet. It was actually a huge run.
Both horses had no choice but to stay on the rails and it would have made the race interesting to see these horses also come down the outside.
Of the two, we’d pick Captain Sweet as the horse with having far more upside.
Still, let’s not take anything from Longwah Supreme.
He might have lost the ride on Hong Kong’s champion miler Good Ba Ba some years ago under “feng-shui” circumstances, but Olivier Delouze is back on a horse – a rising star – that can easily become a future Hong Kong champion.
