We’ve gone back and forth about the nouveau Chinoise restaurant Ho Lee Fook: Yes, we like it,no we don’t, yes, we like it, nah, it’s overrated…
It’s been slagged off in the SCMP for being on the fey side of pretentiousness- and we have stood up for the restaurant. Many times.
In fact, we have been regulars. Past tense: As Hong Kong Belongers, we will never ever again set foot in this overrated and pretentious slab of nouveau chic Chinoise grey cell block.

Why? We reckon it’s always had a racist/prejudiced door policy made even worse recently by a new try-hard manageress from Oz.
Baby, no one is so desperate on a Friday night at 7.30pm as to “have a drink and come back in an hour.” Not in Soho with its wall-to-wall restaurants. Chef Jowett Wu’s cuisine is not THAT good.

Wake up, you bogan Sheila- and be bloody grateful you have managed to get a work visa.
A meal just up the road at the unpretentious Manchu China runs rings around your cuisine, and service- and door policy.

Let’s not open up a Pandora’s Box about the venue’s bad fung shui, shall we- and other secrets?

While dining at what used to be Bistro Manchu on the Sizzling Cumin Beef, Chilli Prawns, Diced Chicken and Walnuts, Mah Poh Dao Foo, Pan Fried Dumplings, Beans With Minced Pork, Spicy Chicken Salad and service genuinely glad to see us, we had to wonder, Ho Lee Fook? Who needs it?
