There was a strong Hong Kong connection today when the Robert Smerdon – trained Tai Tai Tess won the Adelaide Guineas.
Owned by Hong Kong based John Batchelor, Malcolm Keys and well-known bloodstock agent David Price – husband of HKJC paddock parade expert Jenny Chapman – the horse was perfectly ridden by Steven King.
Some might remember King as the regular jockey of former Hong Kong champion galloper Fairy King Prawn when trained by Ricky Yiu.
Meanwhile, there were more Hong Kong connections when Glen Boss rode a brilliant double at Rosehill in Sydney.
Boss has ridden in Hong Kong on many occasions as well as, most recently, Singapore.
Now, the Bossman is back in Oz and taking off where he left off – Winning.
Other jockeys familiar to Hong Kong who won in Oz today (Saturday) were Michal Rodd, Dwayne Dunn and William Pike who won the first at Belmont.
Pike will always be remembered for riding three winners on the trot for John Size when in Hong Kong on a short contract.
However, the really big news was the win of Manawanui at Rosehill in the AUS$1 million Golden Rose.
The horse was ridden brilliantly by Glyn Schofield, the former Hong Kong – based South African jockey.
Glen Boss was on the red hot favourite Smart Missile, but the horse threw the race away by hanging out wide and coming second while the run of second favourite Helmet was just a total mess.
After all that tugging and reefing that it did – apart from missing the start by almost two lengths – It should be re-named Mutt From Hell.
