GETTING TO KNOW YOUR JOCKEYS: ZAC PURTON.

Though he’s been riding in Hong Kong for five seasons, last year was when Zac Purton really arrived and The Zac Attack was seen at its brilliant best. It’s as if the Aussie jockey who had promised so much as an apprentice and when riding as a senior jockey in Oz had finally grown up- on and off the field. Perhaps his voice broke at the same time, too, and he noticed hair on his chest? Who knows, but, right now, The Zac Attack cannot be blunted. Neither can his famous battle-cry of, “Show Me Your Titties.”

Last season was his best in Hong Kong with his win at Ascot on Little Bridge being a highlight and with him being one of the most popular jockeys with punters. Only the very long shadow of twelve-time Champion Hong Kong jockey Douglas Whyte was standing in his way.

This new season, we see Zac Purton, always confident and in demand by a variety of stables, not just continuing from where he left off, but, we’re tipping, him surpassing what he achieved last year. Big call, we know.

Confidence is often mistaken for arrogance and along with an attitude that could be misconstrued by some as being “cocky”, there are some around who would like nothing better than to blunt all Zac Attacks. Good luck to them ‘cos we can’t see it. He has the horsepower, he has the talent and he has done something few jocks, especially from Oz, have been able to do: Win over the extremely fickle Chinese racing media who still believe that “Aussie jockeys ride in gangs”, and with memories of the days when Peter Miers is said to have “controlled” the Aussie jockeys riding in Hong Kong during the Sixties and Seventies still fresh in their often addled and conspiratorial minds.
