It’s quite amazing that despite being screwed around by labels, concert promoters, managers, clients etc for so long, artists keep turning the other cheek and wanting more of the same.
In a place like China, having Intellectual Copyright laws enforced has been “making progress” for over three decades.
Collection agencies in China? Pull the other one.
The old saying, “it’s not worth the paper it’s printed on” is especially true when signing “contracts” in China- and not only when it comes to music.
Those working on music in China really are Dumb and Dumber.
Let’s never forget that today’s music industry in China was “molded” by all those whose labels were sent over from Hong Kong to China ‘cos they were fucking useless where they were.
It was to save any severance pay.
The usual modus operandus was, “He/she’s bloody useless and old fashioned. Why don’t we send them to China? They’d fit right in.”
And they/we did.
Sadly, most of this first group of “exiles” are still there and in exalted positions like Chairman, COO etc of music companies.
Yes, incompetence has been rewarded and some even run labels- and usually into the ground.
Think they know anything about Rights?
Of course not: All they know are Wrongs and Wongs and which is why no one will ever make any money in China selling music,
Forget about small cosmetic “Baidu” changes.
Forget about China’s millions of consumers: They’d rather spend money on high-end products and see music as something discardable- and cheap. Or, better yet, free.
Forget about streaming and downloads.
It all amounts to zero when waiting for that “royalty cheque”.
Those running labels in China are, for the most part, ignorant, arrogant Ye Old Schoole twats.
But twats and the music industry go hand-in-hand.
When it comes to Music and Artists Rights, there is “a China” everywhere.
It’s just in varying degrees- of arrogance, ignorance and stupidity.
This interview below with Don Henley, who has been championing the Rights of Artists is a Must Read.
And don’t think lawyers know the laws surrounding music either- especially, online laws.
These are still to be enforced, they remain grey and is guess work to all those highly-paid “entertainment lawyers” who really know squat.
