The new way of looking at horse racing

AND THOSE WERE THE GRAMMY AWARDS

Taylor Swift seemed to have new lips, the good Lorde had spasmodic attacks performing Royals, everyone fawned over King Jay Z and Queen Beyonce and the Grammy Awards Show was just that- a show- a formulaic show that stuck to bringing different generations and genres together- and hosted by- gawd knows why- LL Cool J.

Still, despite all this One Love musical posturing, there were- and are- very obvious lines of divisions between the Rappers and the white Rock boys and everyone else and the Nashville Cats along with Robin Thicke who looked embarrassingly outta place.

I also have no idea why- and I am no doubt extremely wrong- but I keep thinking Lorde is very much not what she appears.

At least to me, there is something very suss about her image and prodigious talent.

Apart from an amazing performance of Get Lucky led by Pharrel Williams dressed like a Canadian Royal Mounted Police Officer with the great Nile Rogers on his patented Chic guitar sound, the obligatory appearance by Stevie Wonder and the “robots” from Daft Punk who grew tedious and pretentious as the show went on, the performance succeeded by being a well-executed arrangement.

It all flowed and every piece fit despite a shaky vocal from Mr Wonder.

These awards shows, like television talent shows, really must start leaving living legends be and show us those on the fringes of the music industry and needing prime time exposure.

Stevie Wonder, a horrendously stupid grand-standing moment by Steven Tyler, a new throwaway song by McCartney, a vaudevillian performance of Photograph by Ringo, a rambling and shambolic performance by Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson plus Merle Haggard and Blake Shelton did nothing for the glorious past and contributions to music by these great musicians. It was just sad.

Maclemore and Riley were joined by Queen Latifah and an androgynously dressed Madonna was wheeled out plus 38 couples- many being same sex couples- exchanged vows to Same Love- Song Of The Year- really?- which many believe was the highlight of the show.

In the context of a showbiz show, perhaps, though, for me, apart from the acrobatics of the amazing Pink, the real highlight was the jam at the end with Dave Grohl playing real drums and the brilliant Lindsay Buckingham playing real Rock guitar.

Real ‘live’ music by real musicians beats robotic music and fake showbiz all the time- hands down- and who won what will be forgotten by Thursday.

FASTTRACK

The new way of looking at horse racing

The world of entertainment today is vast, it cannot be defined, it is intertwined and has become one. One cannot, for example, have music without fashion- and vice versa. Rock Stars, supermodels, actors and actresses and sports heroes have formed Mutual Admiration Societies.

On www.fasttrack.hk, you will see Who’s In, Who’s Out, What’s Hot and What’s Not- in Hong Kong and the rest of the world- in English and Chinese. It’s all ballsy stuff that breaks new ground and tells it like it is. The gloves are off.

Fast Track is the authority and driving force to steer you along the edgy road to this new world of entertainment.. Of course, there will be our opinions- off-the-wall, to-the-point and no waffle.

More important to us is what you think. Really think. Agree, disagree, or tell us to take a hike. As long as it’s a hike on the fast track of life, it doesn’t matter.
