A FORLORN HOPE WITHOUT FORLAN?

The plan was simple at Inter Milan:
Having lost their world class Cameroonian striker Samuel Eto’o to Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala – making the player the highest paid football ever, on US$ 29M per year (net) – let’s bring in an even better world class striker in the “Golden Ball” winner at last summer’s World Cup Diego Forlan to replace him.
All good and well.
Forlan was signed on transfer deadline day and all seemed to be rosy going into the Serie A season, which started last weekend.
With the prospect of a flood of goals from the Uruguayan international, they were looking good to mount a serious challenge to their neighbours, AC Milan for the Serie A title this season.
BUT- SNAFU!! WTF!!
How about the other big competition – the one called the UEFA Champions League (UCL)?
Due to a clerical oversight by the Inter management that rushed through the last minute transfer, it has been revealed that Dear Diego cannot play in the round-robin group stage of the competition.
Why?
He has already represented Atletico Madrid this season in their Europa League qualifying round match.
Had Inter realized that Forlan could not play in the top-flight European competition until the knock-out stages in February, they still probably would have signed him … but for much less.
With Forlan’s little parting gift for them, Atletico Madrid’s board of directors must have been laughing … all the way to bank!
So without Eto’o – and also without Forlan – will Inter still be able to make it to the last 16?
We think so.
You?
